IShowSpeed Steps Into Film With Powerful Ghana Documentary “The Eyes of Ghana”
Streamer and internet personality IShowSpeed is adding an unexpected credit to his name. The 20-year-old content creator, real name Darren Watkins Jr., has come on board as a producer for The Eyes of Ghana, a 90-minute documentary that shines a light on one of the country’s most important yet under-recognised visual storytellers.
The film, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Ben Proudfoot and executive produced by Barack and Michelle Obama, follows 93-year-old Chris Tsui Hesse. Hesse captured some of the most defining images of Ghana’s independence era and is now working with his protégé Anita Afonu to preserve more than 1,300 reels of historic footage before they are lost forever.
Speed, who has Ghanaian roots, joined the project after a personal visit to the country. What started as a trip turned into a deeper connection with the story, and he decided to help bring it to a much wider audience. At the premiere, the usually high-energy streamer was seen sharing quieter, emotional moments with family and supporters.
The documentary received a special one-night theatrical release on October 28 across the US, Canada, the UK and Ghana. Photos from the event show Speed on the red carpet, posing with the film’s poster and taking in the moment with those closest to him.
For a creator best known for chaotic livestreams and viral antics, this marks a clear shift. The Eyes of Ghana is not just another project for Speed. It’s a personal link to heritage, history and the power of the images that shaped a nation. Fans who usually tune in for the laughs may find themselves watching something far more lasting.
