A Nigerian man remains in custody in Ghana after police stopped what they say was a planned robbery near several banks in Accra’s Labone area.

Augustine Okechuku Maazi was arrested on August 13, 2026, when Ghanaian police moved in on a gang they believed was about to target customers around GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank. A chase broke out, shots were fired, and two suspects were killed. Police recovered two vehicles and a pistol. Maazi was the one they managed to grab.

He’s facing eight charges, including conspiracy and attempted robbery. He has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors claim he was part of a group that had already carried out similar attacks in Tema and Spintex earlier in the year, and that the same network may have operated in Togo and Côte d’Ivoire too.

When he appeared in court recently, the judge refused bail. The court said he has no fixed address in Ghana and that investigations into the wider gang are still ongoing. The case was adjourned to October 22, and Maazi was sent back to remand.

The story has been circulating heavily on both Ghanaian and Nigerian timelines. For now, Maazi stays behind bars while the police continue looking for the others they believe were involved.
